What is Oiled Leather?

Birkenstock oiled leathers are minimally treated and slight variations in colour and finish are common; this is considered a feature of the natural material rather than a fault. Colour variation can often be attributed to different production batches, and is dependent on factors such as the amount of oil used in production and also the cut of leather which is used. Oiled leathers are designed to appear stressed and rustic looking - the leather can look to be dryer or lighter in patches where the oil has dispersed, or darker where the oil has settled. They can appear scuffed and scratched quite easily, but a leather conditioner will help minimise this look. The beauty of oiled leather is that it will develop a unique patina over time that gets better with wear.

Care

Prolong the life of your Birkenstocks by following our care instructions:

  • Trying on a new pair: Follow our size guide to ensure you’re wearing the correct size.

  • Breaking in a new pair: Allow your feet to adjust to your new shoes by limiting wear to just a few hours the first five to six times.

  • Air footbeds regularly: Airing the footbeds prevents the build-up of odours caused by excess moisture.

  • Don’t immerse cork models in water: Water can damage cork-based sandals/shoes and dissolve the glue/sealant.

  • Avoid extreme heat: Heat exposure can damage Birkenstocks. Avoid leaving them in the car or direct sunlight, and keep away from radiators and fireplaces.
